A gloom has descended on nuclear power. There’s the radioactive waste the decommissioning and the accidents from Chernobyl to Fukushima. As concern about climate change increased nuclear’s one saving grace became that it is carbon free. But now the cost of much renewable energy has fallen below that of nuclear. These days we produce little more power from nuclear than we did 20 years ago.

MENLO PARK CA — The U.S. Department of Energy has announced the selection of 10 projects as part of a new Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program Duration Addition to electricitY Storage (DAYS). Awardees will develop energy storage systems to provide reliable affordable power to the electric grid for up to 100 hours enhancing grid resilience and performance.
